History of axe throwing

The history of axe throwing and its origins!

The history of the axe stretches back to the earliest days of humanity. It was initially used as a fundamental tool for survival by prehistoric people for hunting, gathering and building shelter.

Fast forward and you’ll find that the history of axe throwing itself goes back to early civilisations such as the Celts and the Vikings who used axes not only as a common tool but as weapons too. In fact, the most popular hand weapon among Vikings was the axe, often used on the battlefield, as swords were too expensive so only wealthy warriors could afford them.

The typical Viking warrior throwing axe was known as the ‘Francisca’ which consisted of a wide curved blade and a short handle which made it perfect for close-range throwing. Its design was intended to injure and disorient their opponents in battle.

Axe throwing as a sport, however, has a more recent origin. When looking at the history of axe throwing, we have found that in the 19th century, lumberjacks made the activity popular. After long hours of labour, they would look for ways to relax and let off steam, often turning to a bit of friendly competition of skill and precision by throwing their axes at targets, leading to the development of the sport.

In recent years, axe throwing has grown into a widely popular activity, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s not only enjoyed as a competitive sport but also as an activity that brings people together for an ‘axellent’ time. With venues like ours, you can enjoy the history of axe throwing, whilst partaking in a unique experience that’s suitable for both beginners and experienced throwers alike. What’s even better is it’s perfect for celebrating many different occasions such as birthdays, corporate events, date nights and more.

Why is axe throwing so popular?

Beyond the history of axe throwing, you’ll find that axe throwing is a very engaging and fast-paced activity which is both physical and mental. You’ll also find that compared to other activities it is fairly inexpensive and can be great value for money. It can be played solo or in groups, big or small. It’s also open to different age groups and ability levels.

Whether you’re a seasoned thrower or it’s your first time, you can continuously work on your techniques and skills, refining your skills over time with the practice of different grips, stances and throwing styles, which means there’s always room to improve.

It encourages some healthy competition too, as you can work on improving your personal best or throw against other individuals or teams. Here at Valhalla Lanes, we provide a competition set-up, with duel lanes featuring 6 targets per lane, meaning that 2 people can throw at 4 targets each in the same lane.
